About us

An institution in the service of art and knowledge.

In 1810, Esprit Calvet, a collector of the Age of Enlightenment, entrusted his library and his collections of rare objects to the Institute that bears his name.
For two centuries, the generosity of more than four thousand local benefactors has made it possible to develop and enhance this unique institution in France. Atypical and open to developments, it has been a framework for welcoming local family heritage. It has aroused trust, becoming a Provençal cultural referent recognized as such by the State.
Carrying out an activity of general interest and a cultural public service mission, the Calvet Institute is one of the first entities to have given birth to the concept of a museum based on a library.
