About us

Discover the great history of Lyon silk and the men who built it: the canuts.

The Maison des Canuts was created in 1970 by COOPTISS, a weaving cooperative. Historic site from the end of the 19the century, it housed the headquarters of the Syndicat des Tisseurs et Associés.

This unique place invites you to discover the great history of Lyon's silk industry and that of the men who built it: the canuts. The canuts, Master Weavers of gold, silver and silk threads, have shaped the identity of the Croix-Rousse. The origin of the word Canute is uncertain: it would seem that the word comes from the bobbin, the spool of silk thread.

Visiting the Maison des Canuts is to experience a current history. Three exhibition rooms and a workshop are to be discovered.
Our exhibition rooms allow you to trace the origin of silk, the manufacture of gold and silver threads, the organization of the Fabrique, the name given to the silk industry in Lyon, and the revolts of the canuts. The last room is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
