LUVARIA ULISSES was founded in 1925 by Joaquim Rodrigues Simões, an enterprising man with a keen understanding of Lisbon’s inhabitants. While serving on the Lisbon city council from 1919 to 1923, he sought government authorization to build commercial establishments in the then-undeveloped section of the Carmo Wall. Reserving the space at number 87-A for himself, he envisioned an establishment that, despite its small size, would become a city landmark—just as enduring as the mythological Ulysses.
