history of the closerie d'orgemont, restaurant in argenteuil guy de maupassant, author of "bel ami", recounts in his work having founded an artists' colony with several companions . the dreadful dive, where he spent the most beautiful evenings of his life in the company of robert pichon (painter), fernand cormon (painter, pseudonym of ferdinand anne piestre), claude monet (painter and one of the founders of impressionism, born under the name of oscar-claude monet), ambroise thomas (composer), henri de toulouse-lautrec (painter, draftsman, lithographer, poster artist and illustrator), la goulue (whose real name was louise weber, a popular cancan dancer), stood on the southern slope of the butte d'orgemont, at the time of the commissioning of the railway line linking the saint-lazare station to the gare du nord. this colony of artists, combining pleasure with work, settled at mother gerkrath's in 1886, who ran an inn in a place where the closerie d'orgemont is located today. every sunday, the painters and sculptors who made up the group displayed their works to the astonished eyes of parisian passersby. for a pittance, they parted with their sketches, drawings, or statuettes to help cover the costs of living together. the artistic spirit and good taste of the past can be found in this establishment in this charming district of argenteuil.
