Hearty, yet refined food
Named after Ballarat’s first restaurateur “Johnny Alloo”, our aim is to connect people and bring joy through great food and beverage experiences, just like Johnny did. Our philosophy revolves around attention to detail, thoughtful design and a considered menu, to friendly and attentive service. We always remember that great hospitality allows people to connect. Originally built in the 1870’s, “Johnnys” underwent a transformation that lasted 14 months over 2018-19. This included exposing the beautiful solid brickwork, opening up the space and an inside-out redecoration with a contemporary take on the mid century & art deco design styles. We are very proud of what we have accomplished with this iconic building. Owned and operated by Ballarat local Matthew Freeman, who has applied his touch to every facet of Johnnys which is a culmination of many years in the hospitality industry and a love for great design. He is passionate about what great hospitality can mean for relationships and communities, just like Johnny was.
