A taste of Lorraine tradition
a still-living symbol of those great cafes of the "belle epoque", the brasserie, inaugurated during the carnival of 1911, remains the timeless witness of a cultural and gastronomic heritage. when l'excelsior was founded in 1911 by louis moreau, a brewer from vézelise, l'est républicain immediately hailed "the opening of a new and splendid public establishment" presented from the outset as destined for "a brilliant and fruitful career". a vast restaurant, the luxurious flagship of the vézelise brasserie, located in the heart of the bustling train station district, quickly became much more than just a place for passersby and travelers seeking relaxation and tranquility to enjoy a meal. from its inception, the excelsior established itself as one of the most remarkable masterpieces of the école de nancy, a fusion of art and industry. in addition to its art nouveau exterior, designed by architects lucien weissemburger and alexandre mienville, expansive bay windows open onto a majestic dining room. the renowned glassmaker jacques gruber was commissioned to create ten stained-glass windows set in copper frames, adorned with cabochons of glass paste and foliage depicting naturalistic themes typical of the period: pines, ginkgo biloba, and ferns, which pèlerin reproduced in mosaics on the floor. these bursts of ferns, also suspended from the ceiling, are the work of sculptors galetier and burtin, who crafted the moldings and beams. all the furniture, made of solid cuban mahogany, was crafted in the majorelle workshops, complemented by tamarind wood paneling. three hundred light fixtures, chandeliers, and wall sconces in chased copper, signed daum, complete the diffusion of a harmonious ivory intensity. a few years later, at the height of the art deco movement, the staircase was designed by the wrought-iron craftsman jean prouve. excelsior could have disappeared during the world wars and the various urban restructurings of nancy, but the brewery managed to resist, notably thanks to the intervention of maurice rheims in the 1970s. the excelsior shines today as one of the most delightful expressions of the beauty of french heritage. view in full sizeexcelsiornancyhistoire1.jpg view in full sizeexcelsiornancyhistoire2.jpg the brewery experience the aroma of seafood and sauerkraut fills the air in a warm and inviting atmosphere. proximity, friendliness, speed, flexibility, quality, and simplicity are the hallmarks of the brasserie spirit. l'excelsior, this spacious nancy brasserie, is open from 8:00 am to 12:30 am every day and can accommodate numerous customers at any hour of the day or night, while giving each customer the attention they deserve, because for us, every customer is unique. our menu offers dishes, set menus, seafood, and many local specialties that you can enjoy year-round. depending on the season, a second section of our menu will offer seasonal suggestions and creations. our establishment, located near nancy train station, is steeped in history and embodies tradition in all its simplicity. the constant activity of our servers is a well-known and always pleasant feature. the chef and his team will be there to satisfy as many of you as possible. at the excelsior you will be welcomed into a room reflecting the style of the nancy school, art nouveau with stained glass windows by jacques gruber, furniture and chandeliers by louis majorelle and daum pâte de verre lamps. as you leave, the aromas, the atmosphere, the sounds, the setting, and the colors will linger in your memory, transporting you back to another time. a timeless memory. that's the spirit of a brasserie. a true hub of life, conversation, and history, come and experience a unique moment at brasserie l'excelsior.
